Every release is tested against a library of realistic pastes, from support emails and payroll files to chat exports and server logs, with every sensitive value marked by hand.
The held-out set is scored but never used to tune SmartClip, so it shows how it does on pastes it has never seen. Harmless text hidden by mistake: none in the main set, 4 values in the held-out set.

Does any of my text leave my Mac?
No. Cleaning and restoring happen entirely on your Mac. SmartClip has no servers and no account. The only download is the optional name model, which comes in once. Nothing ever goes out.
Which AI apps does it protect?
Protection is automatic in the ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity desktop apps, and you can switch it off for any of them. In a browser or any other app, use Paste Scrubbed (⌃⌥V by default) or right-click and choose Services.
How do I get my real values back?
Just copy the AI's reply. When you leave the AI app, SmartClip puts your real values back automatically. You can also press ⌃⌥R to paste the reply with your values filled in.
What if it misses something, or hides too much?
In the preview, select any text to hide it, or click a hidden value to show it. Choose Always to turn it into a rule for next time. Report a Problem saves an example you can send us, after you've replaced anything real.
Will the AI still understand my question?
Yes. Placeholders say what they replace, like DB_HOST_1 or EMAIL_1, and each value keeps the same one for the whole conversation. The AI sees the shape of your problem without the details it doesn't need.
Does it replace my clipboard manager?
No, it works alongside it. Keep using Maccy, Raycast or Paste. SmartClip keeps your real values out of their history and cleans anything you pick from it inside an AI app.
Do I need the on-device model?
No. On their own, SmartClip's rules catch keys, passwords, emails, phone numbers, ID numbers, bank details and hostnames. The optional 83 MB model adds people's names, company names and street addresses.
What do I need to run it?
A Mac with macOS 13 Ventura or later. SmartClip lives in your menu bar. It asks for Accessibility access only so it can press ⌘V for you. Without it, you press ⌘V yourself.
